Bap is the meal

  • Rice as the center
  • Banchan are the orbit
  • A spoon and chopsticks, not a fork by default
Understanding Korean Culture

Bap means cooked rice and, by extension, a meal. If someone asks whether you have eaten, they are asking after your life, not only your stomach. Banchan are the small side dishes that orbit the rice: kimchi, namul, a grilled fish, a stew. You take from shared plates onto your rice. A metal spoon for rice and soup, chopsticks for the rest. A fork will appear if you ask. Asking is better than leaving hungry.
