Two tides

  • Seollal: lunar new year
  • Chuseok: harvest, like a thanksgiving
  • The country gets on a bus
Understanding Korean Culture

Twice a year the country stands up and goes home. Seollal is lunar new year. Chuseok is the harvest holiday, a kind of thanksgiving. Highways jam. Trains sell out. Your Korean classmates disappear. This is not a vacation in the beach sense. It is a family tide. If you stay on campus you will find a quiet city and a few international students making a pot of rice together. That quiet is also Korea.
