You take shoes off at the threshold because the floor is where people sit, eat, and sometimes sleep. Ondol is floor heating. In winter the floor is the warmest member of the family. Street dust on that floor is a small violence. You already remove shoes in many South Asian homes. Here it is nearly universal, including in some classrooms and temples. When in doubt, look at the pile of shoes.
