Why databases exist

  • A database stores data so many people can use it at the same time
  • It protects the data with rules, not just folders
  • Today we learn three ideas: keys, ER diagrams, and SELECT
Database Systems

Good morning. I am Professor Hale, and this is CS 210, Database Systems. Please listen in English; I will speak slowly and I will define every new word. A database is not a folder of files. It is a shared system that stores data, protects it with rules, and lets many people read and write at the same time. In this short lecture we will cover three foundations: keys, the entity-relationship model, and the SELECT statement. If a word is new, raise your hand or type a question. I will answer in English.
